06/10/05 - Rafer Alston Interview
What was your reaction when you first heard the news of the trade? Rafer Alston: I was shocked. I was getting ready early for practice and was pulled off the court and told I was traded. You sign a long deal there and you're thinking even with the distractions, you put it behind you and work together. |
05/10/05 - Raptors trade Alston for Mike James
Apparently, the tinkering of the roster is not yet complete for the Houston Rockets. On Tuesday, October 4, Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson announced that the Rockets have acquired point guard Rafer Alston from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Mike James. Alston, a six-year veteran of the NBA, brings youth, athleticism, and unselfishness to the Rockets. More importantly, he gives the Rockets the true point guard they needed. .. read more.. |

The kid doesn't look like much. Six-foot-not-much and about a hundred-sixty-nothin'. Sleepy eyes. Put a ball in his hands, and, well, things don't look that much different. The dribble is slow - lethargic almost, but don't let that fool you. Get the kid uptown to 155th Street and NYC, and things change in a hurry. He does things with the ball that defy explanation. He shakes the unshakable. He makes the best defensive footwork look straight-up weak. Still though, he makes it look easy - lazy, almost. Don't be fooled. |

The Toronto Raptors announced the signing of free-agent point guard Rafer Alston on Wednesday to a six-year contract worth up to $30 million US. The Raptors brought back Alston, an on-court wizard who made his rep playing streetball in New York, after he spent one season with the Miami Heat. |

Rafer Alston has endured a form of prejudice that has nothing to do with race or religion. Old-fashioned NBA types tend to glare icily at Alston and mutter, "He's one of them streetballers. Another undisciplined playground kid. If we get too many of them in the league, well, there goes the neighbourhood. |
Interview
Rafer Alston was once named "the best point guard in the world not in the NBA" by Slam Magazine. That all changed when he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1999 and with the Toronto Raptors in 2002. Last year, he impressed the Toronto fans by showing off his signature streetball moves, that landed him on the cover of Slam again, and a spot on the And1 Mix Tape Tour. |

Outside of his status as a playground legend, Rafer 'Skip To My Lou' Alston has accomplished something just as remarkable: he has defied the curse that, historically, seems to leave PG legends in the parks. Most of the gods that occupy the asphalt are unable to fly in the NBA realm. Yet Alston has not only remained a League employee, he has become a starter, a guard who-with the right team-could have just as much impact under the brightness of arena lights as he had under the dimness of park lamps. |
