Nobody tells Earv Opong he is too small to play basketball anymore. His size was all the 5-foot-6 Sullivan County Community College point guard heard about growing up. He heard the same thing at Columbus High in the Bronx, where he sat the bench his senior year.
"That stuff really didn't bother me much,'' Opong said. "It didn't discourage me or anything. I used it as motivation. It just made me work harder.''
All the hard work has paid off. The New York City playground star is being recruited by several small Division I schools. The list includes SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook, Wright State (Ohio), Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac.
By the end of the season, Opong is expected to sign a national letter of intent. "Earv would probably have a ton of more schools interested in him, but they're afraid of his size,'' SCCC coach Will Brown said. "But believe me, he can play Division I basketball. He does stuff I've never seen with the ball. I don't think there is anyone in the country who can take the ball from him.'' ..read more.. |
