30/11 - Canadian Hot Sauce
Toronto - The last time there was a major streetball event here in the T-Dot was waaay back in the summer of 2003 - Skip To My Lou, Alimoe and Main Event were in the building for the And 1 Mixtape Tour’s first and only visit to Toronto. What remains a mystery to me is why they never came back. At the time, I spoke to some of the And 1 reps and they told me that up to that point, there had never been a larger audience for an And 1 Mixtape game, ever. Strangely, three years have passed since then, and now we have the Killer Krossover Tour coming to the ACC on Thursday night at 7:30pm. ..read more..

29/11 - Ghost & area's best featured in Killa Krossover
In the world of street basketball, legends are born on the concrete courts of inner city Detroit, the school yards of New York and the barrios of Los Angeles. The biggest stars go by names such as Hot Sauce, High Rizer, Sik Wit It and High Octane. But some also come from Toronto and have a name like Michael Zanidean. Zanidean, who is known as Ghost among street players in his downtown neighbourhood, will suit up tomorrow against the world's best streetballers in an exhibition game at the Air Canada Centre and on Saturday at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton in the Killa Krossover Tour 2006. ..read more..

27/11 - Still Ballin Tour - Tour Stops in Mojo Land!
The NBNE Street Ball Legends extended a special effort to win in their second stop that featured yet another historical city with a sports background that was featured on the big screen. The Odessa Permian Panthers story was featured in the blockbuster film Friday Night Lights. The players dazzled the crowd as they put on a show while being defeated by the Odessa ‘432 All Stars’. Hawk ignited the team to an early lead with an impressive array of jumpers and dunks, hitting for 23 points and 11 boards, including 3 major dunks. ..read more..

26/11 - Escaping mean streets - Vyron Phillips
Winnipeg basketball player Vyron Phillips was selling candy when his 11-year-old brother was shot dead by a gang member. Phillips remembers every detail of that day in 1996, when his youngest brother Byron died, an innocent victim struck by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting. Phillips last saw Byron alive on the steps of their neighbour's house in inner-city Minneapolis where he was playing with some friends. Phillips recalls having a strange, gut feeling that told him to stick around, but he wanted to earn some cash to buy a PlayStation videogame system. ..read more..

25/11 - Still Ballin Tour phenomenon debuted in El Paso
The high energy game had its share of interesting side stories. El Paso is home of the 1966 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Champions Texas Western College, now known as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). El Paso gained national recognition when the blockbuster movie Glory Road was released in 2006. El Paso was in a high pitch fever the entire game. Fans were wowing as Hawk unleashed a variety of dunks which included a windmill off the backboard to himself. Exile scored at will with his array of offensive skills and tricks. ..read more..

24/11 - Pharm & Special FX in Charity All Star game
When Malcolm Bennett heard he was going to see a celebrities at a charity basketball game, he thought of NBA players. But Bennett, 12, didn't see the Miami Heat's Dwayne Wade yesterday - he had his own game to play. Chicago Bulls guard Ben Gordon didn't make a cameo. But they weren't supposed to. There was streetball at the Westchester County Center last night. And even if Gordon wasn't in the building, another Mount Vernon star took center stage and showed about 200 honor-roll students, things that won't be on ESPN Top 10 plays tomorrow. ..read more..

23/11 - The "Circus" is back in town
In December of 2005, the Strong Island Sound were experiencing the ups and downs that all teams do in their inaugural seasons. That month, they signed a 5'10" guard out of Wichita State that went by the nickname of 'Fridge,' and in only his second game with the team, Jerome Holman was the Sound's high scorer with 30 points in a 119-115 win over the Boston Frenzy. That was a sign of things to come as Strong Island eventually went on a run all the way to the Final Four at the ABA's Great 8 Tournament in Rochester. ..read more..

22/11 - 'Samurai' unleashes excitement on court
Nobody was quite sure about the final score, or about who scored how many points, how many assists they had or how many rebounds they grabbed. Because after all, those were probably the least important things the fans cared about. Yet still, there was one thing during last week's AND1 Mix Tape Tour in Japan that these hoop-crazed folks cared about: interaction with "Samurai." To indicate his satisfaction, Yuichiro Morishita, didn't get on the bus to the hotel quickly, but stayed at the arena to talk with his fans, relatives, friends and staff, all of whom were beaming with bashful smiles. ..read more..

InsideHoops.com reports that Mandy Murphy, who for years has been the main PR person for the AND 1 MIXTAPE TOUR, is leaving the company and will soon move to Boston to work for Reebok. She began with AND 1 as an intern over eight years ago. Murphy said this in an email sent to InsideHoops.com and others: "You must truly believe in what you’re doing to be effective and so I’m not doing myself or this brand any justice anymore by being here. The AND 1 I know and love is now only a memory so, I’d never thought I’d say this, but it’s time for me to move on." ..read more..

19/11 - Time to enshrine Mr. Rucker
Inside of the office, his presence is felt. It's in a picture hanging on the wall. It's a picture of Tiny Archibald, not Nate. He's standing outside on a basketball court in the middle of somewhere. Just standing there. The ground he's standing on is not yet hallowed; yet to be discovered by "GMA" as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Next to that picture is a large framed photo of a Parks and Rec worker. So nondescript is this man that if the photo was not inside of this office, no one would know who he was or why he's framed. ..read more..

15/11 - With Alston in gear, Rockets find overdrive
It can be as simple as a look or a wink. Or just a feeling. "I always talk to my teammates and let them know that just because they're overplaying you and somebody's guarding me tough, don't worry about it," Rockets point guard Rafer Alston said. "Don't just peel out." And don't say a word. The unspoken understanding that great teams always seem to have was not there a year ago. Sometimes, teams play together for months and never find it. The most elusive thing in the NBA is the basketball equivalent to finishing each other's sentences. ..read more..

08/11 - Once upon a time on West Fourth Street
No tickets are sold. Rosters are constantly in flux and the public announcer is half jester, half rapper screaming into a bullhorn instead of a microphone. From my summer apartment there is only way to get to the "arena," by walking into the heart of Greenwich Village through Washington Square Park. The heat on most days is like something out of the tropics. Resistance is futile as the black-top and buildings add to the sweltering heat, each breath entails swallowing the dry-scorching air. As I enter the perimeter of the park, it is now evident that I am now in the heart of the New York University campus. ..read more..

07/11 - Independent film success lifts local star to big-screen
Imagine you are forced to lay it all on the line for one game. Win and you get it all; a house, a convertible and $200,000. Lose, however, and it'll mean you pay the ultimate price, your life. In his first international film, "Shoot-Out," New Britain-born actor and the movie's executive producer Tyshawn Bryant stars in the role of a street baller named House Washington who is faced with this challenge. The movie, written and produced by Bryant's college friend David Branin, is just a 15-minute short starring Bryant and actor Daniel Sol in a one-on-one confrontation, but "Shoot-Out" has caused a positive stir in Holly-wood. ..read more..

06/11 - Rafer Alston "All Rockets need at point guard"
The three qualities that should be valued most in an NBA point guard are, in order — handle, passing ability and shooting. So why were the Rockets so intent on finding someone other than Rafer Alston to hold the keys of a team so well-equipped in virtually every other way? Alston personifies those qualities in every way. He cannot be considered a premier NBA point guard, but a premier guard would command more shots. That is, take shots away from bigger, more important stars and shooters on this Rockets team. Alston is, instead, what the Rockets need, but apparently do not always want. He keeps the ball on a string, is equally adept at going left and right, drives, splits double teams and breaks pressure. ..read more..
