Marvin Collins was a pretty good high school basketball player in his hometown of Atlanta. However, a lack of study time kept him from playing for a Division I college or shooting for a future in the NBA. That didn't stop him from playing his game. Today, Collins is better known as High Rizer. According to fans of the sport known as Streetball, he is one of the best dunkers in the world. "I've earned that title," Collins said. ..read more..

26/06 - His Eyes Have Seen the Glory of Rucker Park
Ernie Morris was at Rucker Park in the summer of 1957 when a giant named Chamberlain crushed a team of all-stars that included Cal Ramsey, a rugged rebounding machine from New York University who later played for the Knicks. “Wilt Chamberlain just about tore the place down,” Morris recalled from a seat behind a basket at Rucker Park on 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, where he watched last Monday’s season opener of the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic. ..read more..

25/06 - Fontenette takes dunking to new heights
T.J. Fontenette goes by several names, whether it's his legal name, Taurian, or his "Air Up There" moniker from the AND1 Mixtape Tour. But ever since joining the Ball4Real Streetball Tour, he's known simply as Mr. 720. Fontenette, 25, acquired the nickname after his 720-degree dunk in Houston last year, in which he made two full rotations in mid-air. The clip has made him an instant star on YouTube. "I still can't believe I did it," said Fontenette, who says he has done the dunk six or seven times since. "But the video's there, so I guess I have to." ..read more..

24/06 - Ball4Real tour is giving streetball a new look
T.J. Fontenette won't even say And1. Instead, he just refers to his former employer simply as "the other tour.” "They took my name away from me,” said Fontenette, who went by ‘Air Up There' for the And1 tour before switching to the Ball4Real tour and becoming ‘Mr. 720'. "I mean, did you really need my name? I'm not there anymore. What's the point of having the name? ”Fontenette, whose 720-degree dunk is the reason for his moniker, and the rest of Ball4Real tour will play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Ford Center. ..read more..

23/06 - The Game: Ball 4 Real vs. AND 1
As we’ve told you before, the mainstream streetball summer scene - previously dominated by AND1 in recent years - has a new player in the Ball4Real tour. Made up of some of AND1’s original (Main Event, AO) and newer (Spyda, Circus) members, the upstart B4R tour is a natural rival for the established AND1 squad. Of course, the question we’ve been getting a lot is, which team is better? In a five-on-five game of real ball, we broke down the matchups. ..read more..

21/06 - EBC Opening Day recap
Ladies and gents, June 18th marked the start of EBC 2007. Festivities galore, stars galore, and yes basketball galore. To begin the day, the Sean Bell All-Stars a.k.a. Hunc Records gave away prizes for making free throws and different jump shots around the court. Meagan Read, a new Def Jam artist, was the MC while they were giving away the prizes. When all of that was done, it was Game Time! Game one featured 123 Bum Said It Records going against Hunc Records/The Sean Bell All-Stars. Both teams were coached by veterans of the game. Raheem coached The All-Stars, and the legendary Tony Rosa coached Bum Said it. ..read more..

16/06 - And1 NY Recap by Salt718
Alright, where do I begin. We got to Coney Island. I dreaded taking the train for a 1:15 from Jackson Heights. We get there, I was pretty excited. We cop our tix, $20. Solid. We get to the gate, "Sorry, sir. Can't bring your basketball in." After about 20 minutes of interrogation and stupid suggestions on what I should have done with my ball amongst myself and about 4 of my friends, I just threw it in the garbage like f#$k it, and I got in. We're sitting on the bleachers, dudes is warmin up, music is bumpin, it reminded me of the old atmosphere of the old And1 games. I also noticed that they were rockin the same jerseys from last year, which was a bit of a dissappointment. ..read more..

08/06 - Can streetball survive with 2 competing tours?
Wailyy Dixon paused, fidgeting with the cell phone in his hands, while his diamond-encrusted watch glimmered off the lobby lighting of the four-star hotel in which he was staying. Being a streetball legend is certainly more glamorous and profitable than it used to be. "Streetball has always been here. For me, it was a safe haven growing up in New Jersey,'' said Dixon, better known as "Main Event.'' "We can't take credit for streetball, but we can take credit for bringing it to where it's at now.''Streetball is no longer isolated to the blacktops. It's a multimillion-dollar hoops industry unto itself that has spawned video games, DVDs, television shows and apparel. ..read more..

05/06 - Kids win at Antwan Scott game
In most basketball games, you have to sit through the whole thing before you figure out who’s the winner. Not on Saturday. The second annual Antwan Scott Charity Basketball game made the children of New Bern winners before the first shot was even taken. Scott, a former Bear and Wake Forest basketball player, held the event in the Bears' Den Saturday night in front of a crowd of screaming - very loudly - children. It was those children that brought Scott back to town. No, not just to hear them shout whenever he slams home a 2, but to help out the ones who need him. ..read more..
