It hasn’t taken long for Joey Haywood to show NBL fans why he was one of the country’s most dynamic university basketball players for three years with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The 27-year-old from Vancouver on Monday was named the National Basketball League of Canada player of the week after helping the Halifax Rainmen post their first two victories of the season. Haywood, who became available when he was passed over in the NBA Development League draft on Nov. 3, signed with the Rainmen the following day and scored four points in nine minutes of action in his first game on Nov. 5. Inserted into the starting lineup last week, he responded by netting 21 points in a 121-95 win over the Moncton Miracles on Thursday and then dropped 17 during a 100-93 victory over the previously unbeaten Summerside Storm on Sunday. ..read more..
The Halifax Rainmen have signed 6’1 Canadian point guard, Joey Haywood to the 2011-12 roster. “We are extraordinarily excited to have a player of Joey’s caliber bringing his talents home to Canada,” said Halifax Rainmen President & CEO, Andre Levingston. “Joey is one of the best players in the country. He’s a tremendous talent who is very explosive. We are looking forward to having him as part of the Rainmen organization this season.” Haywood was the leading scorer for the CIS last season, and also earned the title of Most Valuable Player in the AUS. “It’s exciting to have someone from my alma mater join the Rainmen roster for the first time in our franchise’s history,” said Jad Crnogorac, VP of Playing and Community Relations. “Saint Mary’s has an exceptional basketball history, and we are so excited to add another well known and highly respected Canadian athlete to our team.”

Then former Olympic basketball player Howard Kelsey, who is also executive vice-president of Canada Basketball, took an interest in the Vancouver athlete with roots in the Caribbean. He helped Haywood get recruited by St. Mary’s University in Halifax, where he emerged as a star on the basketball court last year. ..read more..

In the final minutes of a Huskies practice Joey Haywood is moving faster than everyone else on the floor, picking up his man full-court and then sprinting ahead of the pack for a fast-break layup.
