L.A.’s Drew League Seeks Kobe Bryant for Rematch with D.C.’s Goodman League

Drew League may bring some star power to their hotly-anticipated rematch with Washington, D.C.’s Goodman League, seeking the services of Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.?? Drew League commissioner Dino Smiley told the AFRO Aug. 20 that a rematch of the two streetball leagues has been scheduled for Sept. 10 in Los Angeles. ??But Smiley appeared to be taking extra measures to ensure his team doesn’t lose that game. Gary Smith returns to “The Rock”

Phoenix-based baller Gary Smith, 22, has played basketball in plenty of places. He earned all-state honors playing at Glendale’s Independence High School, then played college ball at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota and Pima Community College in Tucson. He’s played for semi-pro teams in Indiana and California and taken part in too many D-League camps, street ball events and dunk contests to count. Still, nothing could have prepared him for playing under the lights at Alcatraz. ..read more..

Brown Shoe to sell AND 1 men’s basketball brand for $55 million

 Brown Shoe said Thursday it plans to sell AND 1, a men’s basketball and lifestyle brand, to Galaxy International, a newly formed brand management company in New York, for $55 million in cash. The deal is expected to close within 45 days. Brown Shoe said it plans to use the proceeds to pay down debt. AND 1 was part of Brown Shoe’s $145 million acquisition of American Sporting Goods in February. For its most recently completed fiscal year, American Sporting Goods achieved sales of $232 million, excluding licensed product sales. ..read more..
